The GUYANA Women’s Basketball Team played undefeated to claim the title of the 12th annual Gillian Brazier Basketball Shootout earlier this year in Antigua and Barbuda. The team claimed a 74-34 victory to wrap up the tournament with a 5-0 record with wins versus St. Kitts and Nevis and Antigua.
The United States-based, Shauntelle Nelson, was named MVP and was also added to the All-Star team, along with Jacobs and the extremely talented forward, Natasha Alder. The local team’s coach, Bernard Daniels was named All-Star Coach.The Guyana Women’s Basketball Association is an organization set to empower and enlighten female athletes from Guyana by providing them with opportunities for personal growth through exposure to Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation sanctioned sporting events and increasing their physical well being and awareness through promotion of women’s basketball programs at all levels. It is their goal to foster skill development by experienced and qualified coaches as well as provide the proper sports equipment in order for us to nurture and create opportunities for these women. Three of the players were awarded athletic scholarships – two at the University of Guyana and one in Antigua.
