Jamila Keizia Sanmoogan will be one of two, and the only female swimmer representing Guyana at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 19-year-old, who recently trained in Columbia on a swimming scholarship, is slated to compete in the Women’s 50m Freestyle event. In an interview the Guyana Chronicle, Jamila shared the following:

“It felt as if my dreams finally came true, there were so many feelings, from excitement to happiness” she stated before continuing, “I’m just happy to be representing my country and I’ll certainly do my best!”

Jamila also had a piece of advice for all athletes, especially swimmers:

“No matter how dedicated your lifestyle is, there is always going to be a point where you will want to stop because it is too hard. You need to find that something deep down inside of you and say I can, I will, and I won’t give up.”

Jamila credits her coaches, her family, and all those who have encouraged her along her way.  The 2016 Olympic games will run from August 5 to 11 and Jamila, along with male swimmer Hannibal Gaskin, will accompanied by swimming coach Paul Mahaica. Guyana’s Olympic Team is made of 2 swimmers, 4 track and field athletes and 2 coaches.

Congratulations Jamila, Guyana will be rooting for you!  You Rock!
