She Rocks! Meet Deborah Cox – Grammy Award-Nominated & Multi-Platinum R&B Singer/Songwriter

Many of you will agree that Deborah Cox is one of the music industry’s most notable voices.   A multi-platinum selling artist and self-proclaimed diva, Deborah was born on born July 13, 1974 in Toronto to Guyanese parents.   She began singing for TV commercials at age 12, and entered various talent shows with the help of her mother. She performed in nightclubs as a teenager, and began to write music around the same time. Deborah entered the music industry in the early 1990s, performing as a backup vocalist. It was while singing with Celine Dion that she won the attention of Arista Records president Clive Davis, who signed her up in 1993.

Deborah’s platinum selling debut album “Deborah Cox” was released in 1995 and earned her an American Music Award nomination. Her 1998 song “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here” from her second album “One Wish” held the record for longest-running number one single on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart (14 weeks), a record held for nearly eight years. Deborah released her third album “The Morning After” in 2002, followed by “Destination Moon” in 2007. She released her last album “The Promise” in 2008. She has achieved eleven number-one hits on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart and is often cited as Canada’s top R&B artist.

Deborah has performed all over the world including The World Music Awards in 2010. In December 2011 Deborah achieved her 11th number 1 with “If It wasn’t for Love”. The singer also appeared in featured roles on Broaday going from ‘Aida’ to starring in the musical ‘Josephine’. She is currently playing the role of Lucy in the Broadway-bound national tour of Frank Wildhorn’s Jekyll & Hyde.The show will tour all over North America for 25 weeks beginning in La Mirada, CA that began on September 7th, 2012. The new production will officially arrive on Broadway in April 2013.

Deborah is married to Lascelles Stephens, a music producer and longtime partner whom she met in 1989. They have two children, son Isaiah  and daughter Sumayah.

UPDATE:  After a 7 year hiatus, Deborah Cox returned to the music scene and has released a new single “More Than I Knew“, which is currently available on iTunes.  The multi-platinum singer was also chosen to re-recorded several of Whitney Houston’s tracks for the Lifetime biopic “I Will Always Love You: The Whitney Houston Story” which aired in February 2015.
