GGR Founder Among 10 Guyanese Women Honored by the Guyana Cultural Association

Guyanese Girls Rock founder, Cloyette Harris-Stoute, was one of 10 women who were recently honored at the 2014 Guyana Cultural Association Folk Festival Award Ceremony in Brooklyn, New York.   Cloyette, who was recognized for her outstanding contributions to contemporary media, was presented with her Award by GCA committee member, Allison Skeete.

Other notable honorees, many of whom were featured by Guyanese Girls Rock,  included Patricia Jordon-Langsford, President of The Guyana Tri-State Alliance, Inc. who received the GCA Lifetime Achievement Award, Dr. Marjorie Jones- 2014 Exemplary Achievement Award; Grace Aneiza Ali – Outstanding Accomplishments in Contemporary Media; Norma Romalho-Bacchus – Outstanding Achievement in Performing Arts; Dr. Carmen Bovell – Outstanding Accomplishment in Education and Philanthropic Activities; Bernadette Indira Persaud – Outstanding Achievement in Visual Arts; and honor student Kamiyah Parchment received the GCA 2014 Youth Award for her outstanding gift of singing. 

Two women were also among the winners of the 2014 Godfrey Chin Prize for Heritage Journalism.  Author Gaiutra Bahadur won first prize for her international acclaimed book Coolie Woman: The Odyssey of Indenture.  Ingrid Griffith won third-prize for her pioneering One-Woman off broadway show “Demerara Gold.” Also awarded was talented singer/songwriter and ABC “Rising Star” contestant, Lisa Punch who received a letter of proclamation from the GCA Committee.

 The event was held at the Brooklyn Borough Hall on Wednesday, August 27th, 2014 and was attending by many prominent member of the Guyanese Community.  The “Welcome to Brooklyn” Keynote address was given by Deputy Brooklyn Borough President, Diana Rayna.

The Guyana Cultural Association Folk Festival Award ceremony is an annual event that acknowledge individuals for their work that represents meaningful “contributions to the improvement of inter-ethnic dialogue and feelings of trust in Guyanese society at home and in the Diaspora.”
