She Rocks! Tricia Teekah of Guyana wins 2017 Commomwealth Young Person of the Year Award

Congratulations to Guyanese Tricia Teekah for winning the Commonwealth Youth Prize for Excellence in Development for the Caribbean & Canada Region!

Tricia co-founded the Guyana National Youth Council with the objective to enhance youth empowerment, engagement, inclusion, and participation at all levels.  She led the ‘Vote Like a Boss’ campaign, a youth voter education initiative which used private sector partnerships to educate young voters. The campaign which was launched in 2016 reached more than 16,000 young people within a month and more than 1,300 young people participated in an online geo-mapping exercise on issues of concern to voters.

She also pioneered the formation of a core committee for the establishment of a National Students Movement in Guayana and lobbied for student bodies in secondary and post-secondary educational institutions.

Tricia is a graduate of the University of Guyana and  a former Representative of the Commonwealth Student Association Steering Committee.

Commonwealth Youth Awards 2017

The Commonwealth Youth Awards for Excellence in Development Work celebrate young people from Asia, the Pacific, the Caribbean and Americas, Africa and Europe who have had a significant impact on people and communities in their country or region.

The Awards, presented to Commonwealth citizens aged 15–29, showcase the work of outstanding young people who are leading initiatives ranging from poverty alleviation to peace building, promoting and enhancing democracy and development.  It demonstrates to leaders and other policy makers the importance of young people’s role in national development. The awards also serve to inspire other young people to take action in their communities.

The awards ceremony was held on 15 March at the Commonwealth Headquarters in London. Here is the clip of Tisha accepting her award.
