Award winning London-born saxophonist and composer Nubya Garcia makes the cover of Jazzwise Magazine. The September issue features an interview with Nubya, one of the leading forces behind the resurgence of jazz-influenced sounds in the UK.
Nubya was born in 1991 in the Camden district of northwest London to a Guyanese mother, Loraine Jansen (Bishops High School alumni); and former civil servant, and a British Trinidadian film maker father. Garcia followed her older siblings to the local Saturday music centre at the age of 5, where she first learned the violin and later played the viola in the London Schools Symphony Orchestra (LSSO).
Raised in a creative environment built by a set of Caribbean parents, her brand of afro-tinged Jazz has made her a key component in a string of new and established jazz groups. She is also the niece of Guyanese-born Stanford University Professor, Dr. John Rickford.
